Solution

What is a Solution?

Solutions are actions taken to address an Opportunity. This can be launching a new feature, improving an existing feature, improving documentation, and so on.

Examples

Good

Example 1:

Manager / Employee “Next Step Guide” - Interactive experience that allows managers and employees to collaborate on paths for advancement.

Example 2:

Develop an imbalanced classification predictive model to eliminate steps 2-3 in the existing verification process.

Bad

Example 3:

Fix the image upload experience to be more intuitive.

Why is this bad?

More intuitive is subjective and loaded with assumptions. Solutions like this can result from failing to conduct discovery to identify specific problems with the existing experience.

Solution Status

Solutions have the following statuses:

  • Idea - the starting state for all Solutions. Designates that it’s a possible way to address an Opportunity but you haven’t committed to building that specific thing.
  • Later - it’s a bit of an anti-pattern to mark Solutions as Later, which is usually reserved for custom problems (Opportunities) you’ve committed to solving, but haven’t started gaining clarity on the problem yet.
  • Next - Solutions for which you’re still ironing out the details or are just awaiting available developers should be marked as Next
  • Now - Solutions in active development should be marked as Now
