Tree
The Tree View is where stategy and discovery meet.
Vistaly’s Tree Editor
Vistaly’s tree editor has several built-in tools designed for developing the strategy space and the discovery space. A core benifit of Vistaly’s design is its ability to continuously evolve – no more static strategy docs and disconnected discovery efforts.
Adding cards to the tree
Cards are added to the tree using the add card actions found in the lower right corner, below each card.
There are rules in place to prevent some cards from being added as children to others.
As an example, it doesn’t make sense to start with an experiment before you have a solution to experiment on. It also doesn’t make sense to start with a solution before you know which problems you want to solve.
These rules are not meant to get in the way, they are there to:
- Support automated status changes.
- Keep the tree, roadmap, and reporting views consistent and in sync.
- Enforce a sane and easy to follow structure.
Moving cards around the tree
One of the great things about Vistaly is its ability to relocate entire portions of a tree while automatically realigning the tree without manually dragging a bunch of boxes around.
There are two ways to relocate cards (and branches) in the tree view.
- Hovering over the move action in the upper left corner of a card.
- Using the move card action in the card sub-menu.
Shifting the tree
Each card in the Tree can be moved up and down (or left and right). This can be helpful when doing quick prioritization or sorting.
If you’re looking for advanced prioritization capabilities, check out this section on custom field prioritization.
Navigating the tree
Hide/Show Cards
When a tree starts to get big, it’s helpful to hide portions of it while you’re working or presenting to others.
Hide and show cards by hovering over any card and selecting the hide/show icons to the left or right of the card (or top and bottom depending on orientation).
Selecting Hide Card hides that card and all its children and descendants.
Zooming
Use the zoom controls in the bottom left of the Tree to zoom in and out.
Zoom shortcuts:
- macOS:
⌘+scroll
- Windows:
⊞+scroll
Collapsing the tree
Collapse the entire tree and start from the top by selecting the Collapse All option in the bottom left of the workspace.
Focusing the tree
Focus Mode cuts down on extra noise by displaying all the cards immediately surrounding the card in focus.
Navigate through the Tree by opening and collapsing different sections. To re-enable Focus Mode, select Focus on card from the card sub-menu.
Showing the Full Story
Sometimes, you may want to work on a particular path in Vistaly and see how you got there and where it’s going. Story mode removes extra noise in the tree by showing from one card all the way to the top of the tree in a straight line. This allows you to only see what’s relevant to the selected card.
Enter story mode by selecting Show Story in the card sub-menu.
When in story mode, new cards CANNOT be added as children to cards in the story. This is prevented to ensure newly added cards are not hidden by default. Exit story mode before working on other parts of the tree.
Working & Viewing Mode
Viewing mode is designed for presenting or exploring the data. Entering Viewing mode removes controls and tightens the spacing between cards.
Searching
Search looks across insights and cards (in the tree and unmapped cards) for matches. A matching indicates the search term is “close enough” to either the title or details of the card or insight. Card title matches rank higher than card details in the results.
Select the button in the side navigation to open search, or use the keyboard shortcut (shown below).
Search shortcuts:
- macOS:
⌘+k
- Windows:
