Getting Started Guide

Step 0: Creating a Workspace

Your first workspace is automatically created for you when you start a free trial. While on trial, you’ll have unlimited access to the product.

Step 1: Structuring Your Workspace

Properly structuring your Vistaly workspace is crucial for two reasons:

  1. The value of Vistaly is in connecting your team’s day-to-day product work to meaningful business outcomes. A well-structured workspace makes these connections clear.
  2. Without it, your Opportunity-Solution Trees will get big and unwieldy. Giving your workspace some stucture allows you to focus on fewer, more impactful opportunities at a time.

Here’s the full guide on structuring your workspace. It walks through how to start by building a KPI tree to map out key business metrics, then identify the leading indicators that will move those metrics, and assigning one outcome to each product trio to focus their efforts.

Step 2: Organizing Discovery Insights in Vistaly

With some proper structure at the top of your workspace, the next step is to bring in the insights you’re gathering from customer discovery calls and other research. This is where Vistaly helps you connect what you’re learning directly to your product strategy.

Create Opportunity-Solution Trees

Opportunity-Solution Trees (OSTs) are central to how Vistaly helps you stay focused on what matters. Your product team’s goal is to identify the most impactful opportunities (unmet needs or pain points your users are facing) that will drive the Outcomes you’re targeting. In Vistaly, you’ll map out these opportunities as branches under the relevant KPI and Outcomes.

Attaching Quotes From Interviews to Opportunities

As you do discovery interviews, attach Insights (direct quotes or key points from customer discovery calls) to each opportunities in your OSTs. This will helps capture the voice of the customer in a way that’s easily accessible to your entire product team.

Insights don’t have to come specifically from interviews with customers - they can also come from surveys, or be direct feedback submitted by customers or relayed by sales/support/success teams.

If you have notes/recordings from recent discovery calls, splitting those up into insights is a good way to start filling out the Opportunity space.

Step 3: Prioritizing Opportunities

Once you’ve done some discovery work around how to achieve an Outcome, it’s time to prioritize which Opportunities your team will address first.

Using Custom Fields To “Size” Opportunities

Most teams use some combination of factors to ultimately determine the “size” of each Opportunity — things like :

  • Certainty - what level of evidence do you have that an Opportunity exists
  • Pain level - does the Opportunity represent an annoying usability issue or is materially blocking people from using your product
  • Prevalence - what % of users are affected by this issue
  • Addressability - how confident are you that you can actually address this with a product change

Use Sessions to Discuss Opportunities As A Team

Sessions in Vistaly simplify the process of looking at a handpicked list Opportunities (including their custom field values and attached Insights) and discussing them as a team.

This feature is still in beta so reach out if you’d like early access.

Step 4: Get Feedback On Your Workspace

We’ve helped dozens of Product teams transition to a more Outcomes-oriented way of working and can help you too.

Grab some time with the Vistaly co-founders for a (free) workspace review. We can give some protips on how to set up your workspace and help you navigate getting your team working this way.
